Violet's Army
'Violet's Army' was from a cross that I made in hope of getting some budbuilder daylilies. Both parents are budbuilders. The pod parent is the first daylily that I ever bought and is a great budbuilder with fantatstic plant habit and is rock solid hardy. However, I have never been able to identify it (a golden yellow star-shaped flower) and it turned out not to be what was written on the tag. The pollen parent is 'Diabolique', another budbuilder. During the 5 years that I grew the plant it never exhibited any budbuilding and the bud count was only 13. However, I decided to register it because it bloomed early and overall blooming always lasted at least a month, and because many visitors to the garden asked if it was for sale. It is a lovely bitone that can change the shades of colour throughout the day, but not by fading. Early in the day the darker colour on the petals can be a clear purple shade and on other days the petals are more of a red/wine colour. The sepals carry the same colours but in lighter tones mixed with a light lemon hue. The summer after I registered it, we had consistant rainfall and it exhibited budbuilding qualities and each scape had over 20 buds, extending the bloom season to over a month and a half!
